De M60 is in 1957 ontworpan op basis van de Duitse M42 uit WOII.
In 1960 ging hij bij alle legertakken in gebruik.
In Vietnam zat er 1 M60 schutter per squad. Verschillende leden van die sectie droegen extra munitiebanden mee voor de schutter.
Dit wapen werd ook uitvoerig gebruikt in helicopters en andere gunships.

Everyone in the squad had to carry the extra gear the squad took out on hump. The smart ones would volunteer to carry extra belts of ammo for the pig, as the load could be easily distributed about the body close up and didn't require any special care, whereas getting stuck carrying saggy cloth bandoleers of extra grenades for the grenade launchers or batteries for the RTO was a royal POS, very lopsided and tended to move around alot, stuck out, got hung up on crap, etc. As an added bonus, the heavy belted brass might offer some additional protection from shrapnel, etc., while the M79 rounds might possibly cook off instead.
Many times, the 60 gunner would have to loan out "his" weapon to a different gunner (in a better position) so he had to carry a rifle and he needed his gear to be compatible with M16 magazines... M56 ammo pouches make great pouches for things other than M16 mags. Many guys wore belts of ammo 'Pancho Villa' style. As was previously said, more ammo was carried in/on the ruck, and the other guys in the squad carried a belt or 2 each for the 60. You also see the occasional M4 bandoleer...
The pig is heavy enough everyone had to be ammobitches for it aswell.
Most pig gunners would have run the web belt,suspenders ,a couple of canteens and the butpack..they may also carry the .45 in its holster and a mag pouch for that and then the usual shit, grenades, claymores, smoke, ... . the ammo was sometimes carried in M4 pouches on straps, especially on rainy days. If no M4's were available, we'd use an extra buttpack. We'd never use the rucksack ourselves, it was always carried by an other guy of the squad who had to carry 2 instead of 1. They always bitched 'bout that.

meer m-60 schutter let op de diversiteit van de uitrusting. Het heel vaak afwezige handvuurwapen (COLT 1911 meestal, indien wel aanwezig). Het gebruik van ammotasjes die eigenlijk niet bij een M-60 horen enz...
